Last Thursday I went to see Speech Debelle at Brighton Coalition. A number of things surprised me about this gig… Firstly, considering she won this years Mercury music prize, it wasn’t that packed. Secondly, considering the same thing, she was probably one of the most down to earth and likeable artists I’ve ever seen play. Thirdly, her support was shocking – think teenage band meets funk meets wedding band and you’re probably half way there, anyone who attempts at covering Basement Jaxx and does it that badly loses my attention almost instantly.
Aside from all of the surprises Speech was awesome, she shared her almost loss of voice with the audience as soon as she entered the stage, but it hardly damaged her performance. If you haven’t given her album ‘Speech Therapy’ a chance yet, then I urge you to do so. One of the best albums to come out of 2009 – and shes got an award to prove it.
