Latching onto you

Disclosure are absolutely killing it this year and this track is one of their best so far. I had the pleasure of seeing them support SBTRKT at Shepherds Bush Empire last week and I was absolutely blown away. Their live set is miles ahead of any other producers performing live right now and Sam Smith’s vocal on this song was absolutely phenomenal.

And as if that wasn’t enough, there’s now this beaut of a video to accompany it too. Ideal.

Not only is this track one of my favourite pop songs of all time, but now, eSenTRIK has increased its value by producing this remix. This has got some serious vibes.

RIP Tony Sly

Sad news spread across the internet last night as fans of punk band No Use For A Name found out about the passing of front man Tony Sly, aged 41.

Like many teenagers at the time, melodic punk rock was a big part of my life and musical discovery around 1998/99 onwards as I turned 15 and searched for music I wanted that wasn’t played on the radio. Fat Wreck Chords was the label that provided me with most of my favourite bands at that time and No Use For A Name were always a choice pick. ‘Making Friends’, ‘More Betterness’ and ‘Hard Rock Bottom’ were three albums my friends and I played until they wore out and they provided the soundtrack to many road trips as we passed out driving tests and gradually, kind of, grew up.

RIP Tony Sly, thanks for the memories.

SAY MY NAME

Hands down, this is one of the most unique and simply amazing remixes I have ever heard. There are no words, except maybe…Cyril Hahn = GENUIS.

Laura

I feel like I’ve done something really great in the world to deserve so many of my favourite artists coming back with new releases this year. There have been many countdown moments where I’ve been obsessively waiting for release days to come around and stalking artist Twitter profiles in the hope of sneak peeks or promo videos but even better than that are the surprises. And Queen of the surprise for me so far this year is Natasha Khan, otherwise known as Bat For Lashes.

I had absolutely no idea that a new single was on its way so when I was linked to ‘Laura’ it was a real Christmas and birthdays all at once scenario. I’ve read alot of blogs talk of their surprise that ‘Laura’ is the lead single from due album ‘The Haunted Man’. For me, its perfect. It combines everything I love about Bat For Lashes, that haunted feeling, the simplicity of the piano which compliments Khan’s powerful vocal beautifully and the pure and true emotion that touches you in a way that many songwriters fail to achieve.

Angels

They’re back! Could this be the most exciting musical moment to happen in 2012? I’m pretty sure its a strong contender. Ahead of their eagerly awaited second album ‘Coexist’ and their bound to be phenomenal headline set at Bestival this coming September, The XX have dropped the first single from the follow up to their debut album, ‘Angels’.

Fans will be pleased to hear that the sound hasn’t moved dramatically from their existing catalogue whilst still managing to sound fresh. For me, ‘Angels’ is like the new album’s ‘Shelter’. Still as beautiful, but with a little more confidence and little more development. Lyrically, its stunning, Romy’s vocals are beautiful and as a package, it’s flawless.

Roll on September.

Hanging On

Image

When a track has been only been up for three days and already has over 270k plays it speaks volumes really doesn’t it? Like many I’ve been wondering what had happened to Ellie Goulding recently, it seemed her relationship with Skrillex was dominating most of her news coverage, but finally shes back for the right reasons, her voice.

New single ‘Hanging On’ is an Active Child cover, featuring Tinie Tempah on MC duties and you can download it for free by following the Soundcloud link below.

Personally, I think its a grower. The positives: Ellie’s vocals are incredible as always, there’s something truly unique about her tone and range that sets her above the majority of the female vocalists coming from the UK right now, even if others can at times outdo her with strength. The main negative for me though, comes in the form of Tinie Tempah’s verse, this isn’t a direct criticism because I do generally have alot of time for him, but something about his contribution to this track almost detracts from the atmosphere it built without his vocal. Overall though, this track does intrigue and excite me about what Ellie has up her sleeve for her next release.

And as a bonus, if you haven’t heard Ellie’s cover of The Weeknd’s ‘High For This’ which she put out there about a month ago, wrap your eardrums round the link below. If you ask me, this was a pretty brave step, but she pulls it off in a very different and beautiful manner.
